GENERAL INTRODUCTION OF MAHARASHTRA
Maharashtra is situated in India’s western region. It is one of the twenty-eight states of India. It is the third largest state by land and the second most populous state in India. It shares borders with Madhya Pradesh to the north, Chhattisgarh to the east, Telangana to the southeast, Gujarat to the northwest, Karnataka and Goa to the south, Arabian Sea to the west and the Union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu to the northwest.
The Krishna and the Godavari are two major rivers in the state. India’s biggest harbour is situated in Mumbai. Mumbai is the capital of the state. The most widely spoken language in the state is Marathi, which is an official language of the state. The state has three international airports situated in Mumbai, Nagpur, and Pune. Mumbai has the largest stock exchange in the country. Ganesh Chaturthi is the main festival of the state. The important tourist centres are the caves at Ajanta, Ellora, Elephanta, Kanheri and karala. The important hill stations in the state are Mahabaleshwar, Matheran and Chikhaldara.
At present, Uddhav Thackeray is the Chief Minister of the state.
