GENERAL INTRODUCTION OF ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS

Andaman and Nicobar Islands is one of the eight Union Territories of India. It is situated in the Bay of Bengal. It consists of 572 islands. Of these, 38 are permanently inhabited. It is the third largest union territory of India by land and the sixth most populous union territory of India by population.

Andaman and Nicobar are two groups of islands. The Andaman group has 325 islands which cover an area of 6170 sq. km and the Nicobar group has only 247 islands which cover an area of 1765 sq. km.

Port Blair is the capital of the union territory. The Andaman groups are separated from the Nicobar groups by the Ten Degree Channel, which is 150 km wide. In the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, there are 96 wildlife Sanctuaries, nine National Parks and one biosphere reserve. Barren Island is the only volcano in India, which is situated in Andaman and Nicobar. The Anthropological Museum, Marine Museum, Mount Harriet, Chidiya Tapu, Wandoor Beach, Viper Island, Cellular Jail and Dilthaman Tank are the main tourist places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
