List of Deputy Prime Ministers of India

The Deputy Prime Minister of India is a member of the Union Council of Ministers. His position is after the Prime Minister in the Council of Ministers. In the absence of the Prime Minister, he presides over a meeting of the Council of Ministers. Usually, senior cabinet ministers such as the home minister, finance minister or defence minister are installed in this position, which is considered the most senior after the Prime Minister.  However, there is no provision in the Indian Constitution for a Deputy Prime Minister. Thus, there is no constitutional compulsion to fill this post. Usually, this post has been used to strengthen the coalition government.
